Laugh out loud!

43474916 - group of friends talking and laughing on the beachA couple of weeks ago, in a conference call of all places, we got laughing about something so trivial, we couldn’t even tell you today what set us off.

At the time, someone mentioned that we’re an especially happy group here at WellVia and it made our day! While we’re in the business of helping people feel better, linking them with some of the finest doctors in the country through the web, mobile devices, or a telephone call, there’s nothing better than realizing we’re living a healthy lifestyle.

You’ve probably heard it before but the ability to enjoy a good laugh now and again goes far in improving your health. But what if you don’t find anything particularly funny to laugh about? How can you tap into the humor hotline to health?

We’re here to help:

  • Start with a baby step – smile! Studies show that even a fake smile brings positive reinforcement from the people you meet. So even if you must force it at first, know that it’s going to get easier – and sincerer – as others respond to you.
  • Adopt an attitude of gratitude! When you start counting your blessings, it gives you something to smile about. Even more, while it might be hard at first to come up with a couple blessings, the simple act of writing them down every night subconsciously puts you on alert for more. Before long, you’re making choices, deciding the best ones to put on record!
  • Surround yourself with funny people. How many times have you heard someone say they fell in love when “he made me laugh.” Seek out people who make you laugh, not necessarily comedians but friends who make you feel comfortable and, well, amuse you. Again, tests show that even forced laughter triggers your feel-good endorphins and decreases stress hormones, eventually developing into the real thing.
  • Learn to laugh at yourself! Things happen to all of us and sometimes, all you can do is laugh. Don’t take yourself so seriously!
  • Seek out something funny. Move out of your comfort zone and catch a funny movie or a favorite comedian with a friend. Play with the dog. Scan YouTube for funny videos. Choose to laugh when you can!

Finally, reap the rewards of a happier lifestyle. Did you know laughter relaxes the whole body, boosts the immune system, protects the heart, burns calories and, according to a Norway study, can help you live longer? Now that’s something to smile about!
